Moving up to Beavers

When you are 6 years old, it is time to say goodbye to Squirrels and move up to Beavers.

The Beaver Colony is very similar to the Squirrel Drey – except that as you get older, the adventures you go on and the skills you learn are even bigger and more exciting!

Moving up

At your last Squirrels meeting you will take part in a “climbing up” ceremony, where you will officially leave the Squirrel Drey.

Once you’ve been at Beavers for a few weeks, you will be invested as a Beaver to make you a full member of the colony. This is very similar to when you were invested as a Squirrel, but you will make the Beaver Scout promise.

Uniform and badges

Find out about the Beaver uniform here.

When you finish Squirrels, you may have a lot of badges on your uniform! You shouldn’t move any of those across to your Beavers uniform to start with, but after you’ve been invested into the Beaver colony there are a number of badges you should move across:

  • You won’t need to move your membership badge, group name tape, district or county badges across because you will be given new ones.
  • Your Squirrel activity badges (round with a green background) do not get moved across, but any staged activity badges (round with a blue background) can get moved across to your new Beaver uniform. You can work on the next stage of these badges as a Beaver!
  • If you have any Joining In awards (for each year of membership), you should move across the most recent one only.
  • If you have earned the Chief Scout’s Acorn Award as a squirrel, you should move this across to your Beavers uniform until you achieve the Chief Scout’s Bronze Award.

Keep your old Squirrels badges that you have not moved across – you can add them to your camp blanket (or put them onto your camp blanket in the future if you haven’t got one yet!). If you would like to recycle your old Squirrels uniform, please let your leaders know – we try to offer unwanted uniform to new members in order to reduce their costs.
